70. Chaffeuring Taxpayers on Pay Equity

Unpublished
30 July 1998

Re: Dances with taxpayers, July 30th.
It is no surprise that the $3-4 billion pay equity bill is being blamed on the “equality industry.”
Anti-affirmative action and anti-public spending advocates are noticeably unrepentant now for giving dithering governments a false sense of non-compliance security following the 1978 Human Rights’ legislation.
A country like ours that sanctimoniously lectures other nations about Human Rights’ compliance should at least admit a communal responsibility and promptly pay up without dragging the same ‘helpless taxpayer’ corpse to the scene of every policy accident argument.
If tax-paying citizens must have their political thinking chauffeured around this seeming pile-up of social policy settlements, news and opinion shapers should finally admit that defensive driving on the social justice highway requires anticipated acceleration instead of a delayed slamming on of the brakes.
