While headline writing is the task of copy editors, who at the Globe and Mail in the unavoidable give-a-party-a-push media endorsement wars is deciding which favoured party leader(s) (among Messrs Chrétien, Charest and Manning) deserves to be displayed as a daily “newsmaker” in front page stories?
Noticeably absent from today’s national edition (May 23) was Alexa McDonough’s much televised bite, “It’s about [better paying] jobs stupid. ” Looking for any evidence of the McDonough quote I checked my paper throughout before I happened upon a wealth of similar political reminders waiting for headline promotion in the clues of the Challenge Crossword. There — relevant to the editorial positioning of tax and programme cuts over job creation and wage hikes as the primary election issue — was today’s 18 Across Quick Clue: Hard of Hearing, and, in the Cryptic category, 9 Across: Half Afraid To Give A Hand.
